What Happens When We Give?

what-happens-when-we-give

Kindness, like laughter, is a fantastic happy habit that benefits both our physical and emotional well-being.

Did you know that those who are kinder have longer and healthier lives? Community volunteers are likely to have fewer aches and pains. Helping others improves overall health twice as much as aspirin does for heart disease. People 55 and older who volunteer for two or more groups, such as the non-profit organization in Haiti, have a 44 percent lower risk of dying – even after controlling for physical health, exercise, gender, smoking habits, marital status, and many other factors.

We feel so wonderful when we contribute because we experience what experts describe as a “Helper’s High,” or a specific bodily sensation associated with helping.

Volunteers feel stronger and more energized after assisting others. Finally, compassion brings us joy. Volunteering helps to alleviate depression symptoms. It makes you feel calmer and boosts your self-esteem.

This is especially true for adolescents who give because they are happier, more active, involved, thrilled, and engaged than their less-engaged peers. Generous behavior lowers the likelihood of adolescent sadness and suicide. According to research, teenagers who volunteer are more socially adept and have higher self-esteem.

One of the most important things we can do to raise happy and healthy children is to teach them to be kind. Begin by looking for Community Christian Services in Palm Beach Gardens, FL, donating, and supporting children’s programs.

Bethesda Community Christian Services is a non-denominational organization that serves children of all ages, races, genders, and religious views.
